A Proud Moment.

I don’t have a degree in eating blocks of cream cheese, which sucks because I’m sure it would add a lot of value to my CV. (Instead, I have “lying, poorly”. Does that count?).

I did eat a block of cream cheese once, though. I remember it fondly, because it was one of the proudest moments of my life. This probably says a lot about me, though god only knows what.

I used to be part of a youth group, which is to say, yes, I was part of a church once. I was the “youth leader”, which is the church’s way of saying, “you are the only person in the youth group who doesn’t roll your eyes at us, when we talk to you.” What they did not know is that - aside from not actually being terribly religious - I had made the youth minister my sworn enemy.

He was a weird guy. Very young; not too bright, frankly. Had a goatee, because the law requires all youth ministers to have goatees. It’s true. Look it up. He told us that Mormons owned Pepsi-Cola, and that The Gay Agenda created yaoi to recruit young men, the latter of which “fact” was really, really funny. A lot of the things he did were not so funny. Once, we went to a nursing home, where he decided to jump up and down in the elevator. He knew, of course, that I had an elevator phobia. I asked him to stop. He began sing-screaming, LONDON BRIDGE IS FALLING DOWN, FALLING DOWN, FALLING DOWN as he jumped. A chaperone asked him to stop, couldn’t he see I was afraid? I backed into the corner and crouched there, clinging to the railing. That was the day he became more than just a moron. That was the day I decided I would make his youth-group life a hell.

Most of the time, all I had to do was ask real questions about the Bible, and then ask him questions about his answers, and so on and so forth until he ran out of excuses, or said something deeply embarrassing. One day, he was trying to explain why it was still totally okay for parents to stone their kids to death for disobeying. He was flustered; inarticulate. I pulled a room-temperature block of Philadelphia cream cheese. He watched me unwrap it as he rambled on. I took a bite. I locked eyes. I did not look away. I ate in silence. There was confusion written all over his features. His sentences tumbled apart into further incoherence, and faded away. He was afraid.

I cherish that moment.

it’s amazing how far Homestuck has come- and holy shit man, you came this whole way with it! but why…?

i have a theory why, actually.

have you ever heard of the “Agatha Christie Code”? for people who have no idea who Agatha Christie is: she’s widely considered one of the world’s best selling novelists.

the Christie Code is the theory that the main reason her books were popular (and still are, 25+ years after her death) is that they are literally addictive

so what is the Code, and how does it relate to Homestuck?

the Code consists of a few elements key to her writings:

lengthy establishing descriptions at the beginning of the book

quick dialogue and action towards the middle and end of the book

simple phrasing, and a lot of repetition of both words and themes

but most importantly… the use of 9+ characters

why 9 characters?

according to a documentary about Christie’s methods, the human mind can only devote focus to between 5 and 9 things/people/plotlines at a time.

past that, the reader will go into an actual unfocused hypnotic trance. they become overloaded with the cast of characters, and the intricate red herrings, and all the repeated words, and soon they are motherfuckin entrenched in that bitch

look back at that list of elements ^ and you’ll realize that every single one of them applies to Homestuck: the simple format catches you, the shit getting real keeps you, the memes indoctrinate you, and Hivebent seals the deal.

i repeat: hussie is a genius.

Dear fans, do you sometimes stop and ponder what an incredible thing the fandom is? A bunch of people, drawing, writing, compiling, editing, creating stuff - all for the simple reason that they enjoy something together?

For free.

The only payment these people receive is their own joy over creating something, and the joy that they bring to their fellow fans. But, here is the catch - how will they know if we won’t tell them?

I know, there are kudos and tumblr notes nowadays, so it’s easy to just click a like button and that’s it. But every artist, author, everybody who offers their work to the public will tell you - comments are the single most wonderful reward for your work, ever. Fanworks require time, energy, often careful planning and research that by far exceeds the expectations of the crowd. The little pat on their backs, the short line telling them somebody did appreciate their work, is everything they need to be happy and make the effort worth it.

Especially if you ever feel like you yourself can’t contribute with anything to the fandom, comments are exactly the one thing everybody can do and that can also make the biggest difference.

But I can’t write comments/my English isn’t good enough/I never know what to write.

Shh I know, I know. Here is the thing: try. No matter how short the comment, no matter how many mistakes it contains (dear ESL, it’s already amazing you understand a second language well enough to read fiction in it, don’t let anybody tell you otherwise) - the author/artist will appreciate. Even a single line of “Cute!” or “Nice job” will prove to them that somewhere, someone liked their work, that their hours spent putting it together were not useless.

You don’t believe me? Think about your own life, about how nice it feels to have your work praised, no matter if it’s brownies that someone finds delicious or a compliment on the fandom badge that took you ages to acquire. It’s true that fanwork starts from the passion of the authors themselves, but the moment it gets put in a public place, it’s immediately offered to the masses. Will my fellow fans like it? Will they hate it? WE JUST DON’T KNOW unless we leave a comment.

But you can’t expect me to comment on everything I read/see/listen to!

Of course not. The point of commenting is to show the author/artist how special they are, that they did something that made you feel/understand/experience something you never did before. Comment on the things that touched you, that made you laugh or cry or look up that one thing about the lifespan of caterpillars you had no idea about until now. Personally, I’m using a simple rule for comments on fics - if I bookmark it, I leave a comment. If something caught my attention to the point where I wish to return to it in the future, it’s fair to let the author know.

Please, fellow fans. Let’s leave comments. It won’t take you three minutes but you’ll make someone smile, feel appreciated and, oftentimes, inspire them to create more. It’s a win-win situation for everybody, and all that it takes is to overcome the bit of shyness or laziness and type the few words that first come to your mind.

I recently realized - a couple of people in fandom whose names I recognized when I got into Homestuck, but couldn’t remember where I knew them from - I recognized their names from comments they’d left on my Doctor Who fic a long time ago, because I still remembered those comments. They make a big positive impression. ^_^
